For about two years, I was having a problem with two CD ROM in the PC. Those are SCSI CD ROM (Reader and Burner) connected to their own SCSI controller. The SCSI disk is having its own directly on the board. I thought the problem was related to Win ME. As I still have the same problem in Win2k, I thought I would try to look for something else. The problem is that I am getting a really bad noisy sound (a motor), sometimes, when the CD is being read. I get this either on CD 1 or CD 2. This only happens at read mode. If I burn a CD, I don't have any problem. If I read a CD that I burned, I don't have any problem. If I try to install a software from a CD, I will mostly not be able to install. I will have to copy the CD on the drive and install from it. If I try to play a CD music, I'll get the problem. If I try to copy an entire CD, I'll have the problem, but with several retries, I would able to have it copied entirely on the disk and I would then able to install from the disk.
I thought the problem was related to CD 1. So, I removed it. I only have one CD now connected to the SCSI controller and that is the CD burner. The problem is still there.
I thought the problem was related to the audio cable from CD line out to the soundcard. I removed it. The problem is still there.
I thought the problem was related that I didn't put the jumper on the CD for the termination. I put it today. So, I have one peripheral on the SCSI controller and it has the termination. The problem is still there.
I have an Adaptec SCSI controller AHA-3940AU/AUW. I suspect that the problem relies on the SCSI CMOS. If that is, what should I look for?
