Actually, something of the kind happened on a PDP machine once in mid-80s (heard it at a training course from the SysOp of the beast). There was a long weekend by the end of November (Republic Day two days off, plus two days weekend) and the heating in the building was turned off. First day in the machine wouldn't boot for several hours, until the room warmed up enough. Could be anything, from the disks being unable to spin up to speed, to thermic dilatation having some contacts broken. The layman's explanation was "it was so cold, that the chips have curled their legs".

BTW, the same guy has come up with the cheapest networking hardware system ever: frizbee network. I immediately saw forty guys in a big room shooting floppies at each other and couldn't stop laughing for quite a few minutes.
