Since my name, and the tool I wrote are being mentioned, I hope you don't mind my jumping in.
You're right about the object being visible. The object must be visible on the screen. The application does a bit-block transfer of screen memory. If, for example, another object partially obscures the one you're interested in, then you'll get a portion of it. IOW, it must be completely visible. The way the application works is to bring the form containing the object to the top of the Z-order.
Please remember that I wrote this as a developers' tool for producing graphical help files. Can it be used for other purposes, such as grabbing a screen shot of the current form? Absolutely! In fact, I know of some folk who have done just that. I think what you're looking for is far beyond the meager capacities of the tool, however.
