One thing I forgot to mention is that it isn't advisable to travel by bus when:
a) There is heavy rain. This can make the roads impassable for 12 hours or more.
b) When some not-so-content group threatens to block the roads. Unfortunately, this happens frequently. One of those groups, often involved in unrest (but not the only one!), is the coca farmers. I mentioned earlier that coca leaves are legal in Bolivia. However, due to outside pressure - mainly, from the U.S.A. - the Bolivian government is trying to erradicate all coca plantations in the country. This creates a lot of unrest lately.
In both cases, you have the risk of staying stuck "in the middle of nowhere"...
