Had unsucessfully tried SW_SHOWMINNOACTIVE (7) prior to starting the thread, but thanks for the suggestion.

Have yet to try WSH and will do so.

The compromise solution may be to use COM for Word and similarly behaving apps and ShellExecute() or WSH for all others.
