Just as an FYI and conclusion to the thread, just wanted to let everyone know that we successfully worked around the problem.

Since the error didn't get sent to the textbox control (go figure), we trapped it in our base form class error event (as per Dragan's suggestion). We added THIS.GotFocus() and THIS.ActiveControl.SetFocus() to get the tabbing and field navigation to work correctly once the error had been trapped. Everything seems to be working just fine.
