Check your port settings in both Hyperterminal and your MSCOMM control to ensure they both agree. Set the MSCOMM RThreshold property to 1 or no data is the result. If using hardware handshaking, make sure the cable is correct. If no go, let us see all your nondefault MSCOMM properties and your OnComm event code.
