RedHat 6.2 is comparable to Windows 1.0 ...

Recent distros, like SuSE 7.3 or Mandrake 8.0 or the latest RedHat, have graphical installation which includes automatic recognition of network and other peripheral cards. These distros are as easy or easier to install than any Win OS. For example, I installed SuSE 7.3 Pro, using the "almost everything" option on my Athlon 1GHz, 512MB RAM, 2 30GB HDs, Lexmarkz52 attached to a Zip250 which was attached to the parallel port, an ATI r128 video card connecting a MAX 17" monitor, 3Com905C ethernet card, and a PlexStor 4832i CDRW. I answered a few questions: root password, login name and password, size of install ('almost everything'- 6GB of files and 2,000+ apps!), and dekstop size. A cup of tea and 1.5 hours later it was done and done perfectly. One reboot, no crashes. In fact, in four years I have had only two crashes, and they were both my fault. You can get single CD ISO's of reacent distros for about 25 cents/CD US at http://www.cheapbytes.com/shipprom.htm

Status Supported, Driver Name: rtl8139, 8139too

RealTek 8129/8139
Status: Semi-Supported, Driver Name: rtl8139, 8139too

Another PCI single chip ethernet solution from RealTek. A driver for cards based upon this chip was included in the v2.0.34 release of linux. You currently have to answer `Y' when asked if you want experimental drivers for v2.2 kernels to get access to this driver.

Donald Beck says that cards based on this chip are around the same price (or even cheaper in places - 13 bucks!) as a PCI NE2000 clone card, and while the 8139 design is not the best 10/100 board, it is better than a PCI NE2000 clone card.

The 2.4.x kernels have another driver called 8139too which was based on rtl8139 but tries to adress some of the more common problems people were reporting, so you may wish to try that if using a 2.4 kernel.
