I see the ability to default the search to the previous 2 years, but I don't see the 4 month search anywhere (in my account setup or on the main search page). Perhaps I am overlooking it?

If you only get the search in the actual period, this is because you haven't checked the option to search on the last 4 periods. Doing it will default the search over there as well to search on the last 4 periods. Then, from the search result, you can adjust to go further if you don't find what you are looking for.
