I tried to register mscal.ocx as follows:

regsvr32 c:\program files\microsoft office\office\mscal.ocx

The registration succeeded, but I'm still getting the same error in my program.

How can I check that mscal.ocx is the ocx being used by _olecalendar?

Also, if it is the correct ocx, why is it still not working?

Kind of bummed out as _olecalendar is a foundation class and should work without this many hassles.
