Index records are usually much smaller than the actual records.

Again, going back to the original question, he asked if a view would be faster. I threw in parameterized for free, but also mentioned query (referring to a SELECT) statement.

I think the view would give better overall response, and I think there would be quicker reponse navigating between records. The performance hit when the view loads should be minimal, especially if the teacher is retrieving 25-50 records out of a table of only 9,000 students.
