What sort of printer do you use? If you use, e.g., an Epson dot-matrix printer, you should basically print in text mode. Sending "Courier" or "Courier New" font to the printer will be interpreted and printer by the printer as graphics, and therefore be slow.
Try sending a text to the printer with "???", or download my text-report class, and see the difference.
