The .NET framework isn't an application framework, so to compare it to their past application framework experiences is a bit misleading.
Its a framework designed to give a programming language the bulk of its power (commands and functions), and one could argue that they've had successfull past expierences doing that by looking at their currently avialable languages which are widely used.
