Another option would be to encrypt/decrypt the VFP data on the fly. There are some third-party tools for this, for example Cryptor. There is also free _CryptoAPI.VCX in VFP 7.0 FFC and sample how to use it. Automatic data encryption/decryption is also a feature in some frameworks, for example CodeMine, where it may be enabled just by setting the property on the corresponding textbox or editbox.
