I think it goes the same as your Explorer View Options where we associate various applications to extensions.

I changed the default browser a few times and those keys in the registry were changed:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
HTM_AUTO_FILE
SHELL
OPEN
COMMAND
HTML_AUTO_FILE
SHELL
OPEN
COMMAND
