Thanks! It was the trailing nulls that did it, i.e.,

cUser = STRCONV(cUser,5)+CHR(0)+CHR(0)

Incidentally, I changed the length to -1 (MAX_PREFERRED_LENGTH) so the API would decide how long the buffer should be.
