We have some utility files and tables prefixed with a "$" and we're able to work successfully with them.

In VFP, I'd always avoid "&" as that's the macro substitution operator. A recent thread shows that VFP will recognize an ampersand embedded in a string as the operator and attempt to evaluate the characters in the string following it.

No experience with "#".
