In order to use a printer on a USB port from a Win3x app, you need to use the printer name, and must adjust the printer name so that it is compliant with Win3x file names. No spaces, no special characters, preferably with a name 8 characters or less in length, with the leading character an alpha or "_". The use of short name compliant servers and shares not mapped to a local resource is usually necessary (ie using UNCs in a FPW app), too.

Some local USB printers let you associate the printer with a local printer port if it's shared and the shared printer is then pointed to the local port with NET USE.

>To more specifically address the "pure virtual function call" error...I've done some research on that error. Lots of times it comes up in discussion of programming with Visual C++. It makes me think that HP is writing their drivers (like for the LJ 2100 and newer printers?) in Visual C++.

I was able to get rid of the problem by downloading the most recent driver for that printer (this was in August 2001, and the latest driver was just released the same month) and installing them. We also have more success using PCL 5e than PCL 6.
