Hi Ben,
Just to tell you, what you're not alone. We have Novell network here. If some application was closed by Ctrl+Alt+Del, some tables could be locked by server and could be opened only in read-only mode. The only solution we found so far is to restart workstation, which causes this problem.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
