Mike isn't far off the mark. Having grown up in a family involved in the forest industry, both on the government and industry side for generations, I might have some insight. My father just retired from the Ministry of Forests (The Forest Service) as was part of the reforestation section.

Current forest management practices on both sides of the border treat forests as lumber crops. Non indigenous species and hybrid species are planted in the place of the originals. Forests are kept in a state that promotes softwood tree growth, instead of allowing all the stages of development. The result of both this is reduced biodiversity in terms of plants and animals.

We need to harvest lumber, but I think we should stop kidding ourselves that we are are having little impact and are "reforesting".
