I was going to ask too, but had other points I wanted to make.
I think it is a fair bet that there are far fewer trees today in the US or Canada that there were in 1492 or 11xx or whatever one picks.
A commercial that ran a few months back around here said 'there is more wood in our forests today than there was 20 years ago'. Well, duh - they've had 20 years to grow. They tried to take the credit for that.
