"Why wouldn't it" is neither an argument nor proof.
That means if anything open source and closed source are even, not (as you stated) that open source is advancing faster than closed source so that it could catch up and pass closed source.

If at the end of the day, people are going to have to pay something for open source software, if they don't then IBM will stop pouring billions into it. They have to get their investment plus more back out.
Also, how long before a huge company like IBM invests tons of time into a huge thing ... say... open source Linux clustering, only then to have somebody repackage and compile the code into a distro and undermine their ability to make some cash off of it? That's pretty risky for a big business.
