Will a normal install of an MSDE 2000 database 'automatically' install the necessary SQL Server ODBC DLLs such that I can use that driver syntax in my connect string?

Kevin,
Yes. MSDE is the SQL Server data engine with some limitations built-in. Being the same engine, it uses the same ODBC driver.
