I've been reading the Design Patterns book lately, and I found it interesting that inheritance was downplayed in favor object composition. In any case, decorating an object is a valid alternative to subclassing, and it seems that the technique could be used with VB6.

Exactly... When it comes to UI construction, inheritance is a great tool to have. When it comes to middle-tier development, inheritence - IMO, does not play that big of a role - at least I don't think it should.
I have always said that if inheritance were THAT big of a deal, VB would have not enjoyed the popularity that it did/does.
At one time, I was shooting off at the mouth about how the VB world was a bunch of frauds when it came to OO. I was proved wrong - I admitted as much and I eventually ate a lot of crow on the issue.
