Yeah, it seems to be a "cause."

I personally have had situations where blinking text was exactly what I needed. One example that comes quickly to mind was an application I designed for a local theatre. They needed text to revolve around the screen to mimic the affect of a Broadway-type sign. So, just because it's contrary to the "Guidlines" (said in a reverent tone with angels singing in the background) doesn't mean it shouldn't be done. It all depends on your audience.
