>By the way, my kid is looking to write software games. He is still young, do you have any ideas on what direction, package I should steer him in?

Just about every serious game is written in C++. Almost all consoles games (xbox, playstation, mintendo) are written in C++ as well. Although, there are alot of games being written in Flash and Shockwave now (

They would need a very good education in 3D graphics and some knowledge of physics as well.
However, there are plenty of good game engines floating around (all the hard stuff is already done). You can use them and then do a little customizing to the engine for game and create all the graphics.
