Too slow? Sounds like a configuration problem. Sendmail was written to be fast, especially the bulk-mailer feature.

You might want to try compiling it on the box it will run on. Also, check your sendmail log file to see if you are encountering a looping or race condition or time-out condition, which would slow things down considerably.
