I absolutely agree. It doesn't work and screwes lots of messages (or FAQs items). If one message contains more than 1 code fragments, it does it incorrectly, etc.

Before implementing this feature it should be thoroughly tested in different variations. Currently it doesn't help, but makes a mess.

Or you can introduce new tags for auto-coloring and leave pre tags the way, they were originally.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
