The SP helped (maybe), because in the meantime I'd also changed the code from a SQLPREPARE and subsequent SQLSELECT to a straight SQLSELECT and a server side view instead of the query from VFP.
Whatever the problem was, it wnt away.
I'll send them the log anyway.
