Old growth lumber has tighter growth rings because the trees must grow slowly because of competition for resources. Managed tree farms space the trees so that each tree is better able to get the resources it needs for fast growth. This results in wider growth rings so the lumber is lighter, softer, and weaker.
There are more knots because they are using different species of trees and harvesting after 20 years so the trees have not reached their greatest attainable height (the branches are not as spead apart along the trunk.)
