I believe the best way to do the upgrade is to make a clean install and reinstall all products. I know it is a pain, but, for example, I did the upgrade from 98 to 2000 Professional and then my Windows was slowly dying for a year. I had to do the clean install and after that did not have any problems. Also, some programs/applications have different versions for 98/2000/XP. Many hardware pieces definetily need specific XP drivers.
