Does anyone have experience with interfacing to a mainframe that has VSAM file structures?

We are looking to buy a DDM(Distrubuted Data Management) software that works on the mainframe to replicate or translate the VSAM files to SQL Server. We have been reading about ways to access VSAM files from a PC via VFP but would like to know if anyone here has any experience or advise as to where to look for more information.
