I understand you. Perhaps I haven't been as clear as I need to be. Underneath W98 resides DOS VER 4.10.2222. The version that W98 likes to be known as may be different but I'd still think that it sits on top DOS like W3.11 did - perhaps better integrated.

I think that NT, W2K and XP start to dispense with the old model.
