If I can I always try and use ADO. I prefer it because it has an OOP interface and for my work (Oracle) it's less trouble. Otherwise there isn't much difference. I don't know what SQL2000 is, but I have found in the past that ODBC drivers can be a real pain when it comes to running stored procedures.
If you do use ADO make sure you get 'ADO 2.6 Programmers reference' from Wrox press (David Sussman). It's the bible for ADO access.
