That is an "i" with a line over it, meaning it is a long sounding "i" (sounds like the letter itself). It counts as one syllable, and the "L" does not count as a syllable. Other words with long vowel sounds, ending in "L" are:
bale
deal
mule
pole
And they are all considered to have only one syllable, AFAIK...
