I've seen a similar problem, and have entered a bug on it. In my scenario, Properties window is open, and you select an object. Alt-W (in an attempt to get to the props window w/o mouse), and it comes up "Multiple Selection". Weird thing is that it does it in 6.0, too. I can't believe no one ever found this. :-)
