Don't be too sure about the MAC address being a guarenteed unique value; several routers permit all NICs within a managed subnet to appear to have the same MAC address. It's a trick used by a number of inexpensive Internet connection sharing routers to defeat the protection some ISPs use to ensure that their WAN cnnection is not shared - both LinkSys and NetGear offer this MAC address emulation capability.
