Right. I was also surprised when I first learned that some indices may
significantly slow down a query, instead of making it faster. But speed tests reveal that this is, indeed, so.
You will usually want to index fields that have few records for any one value. In some cases you have no choice (Referential Integrity, but this isn't usually a problem).
