I have been programming for a number of years and use all the major backends. This is a question about connections. I was taught to make a connection and then end it as quickly as possible. Now our network/SQL Server administrator has suggested keeping open one connection and not closing it until a person closes the ASP application.

Our applications are run for day and swing shift so they are open for 8 hours each. If I were to do this I could have one connection string in a global.asa file. I usually do this with one INCLUDE file, as we migrate from personal, to developer and then production servers.

Any viewpoints will be appreciated. Sometimes it is good to review “what you thought you knew”, and why!
