Rick;

I am surrounded by high tech companies. Intel is just down the street from me and they drive a lot of this industry we are a part of. My wife told me they will never make a computer fast enough to please me. So far she is correct (as usual).

About 8 years ago DEC brought out a line of PC’s (remember that anyone?) that were amongst the fastest on the market at that time, 100 Mhz CPU’s. The company I worked for bought 100 with the intent to sell a computer with their software loaded and ready to go. It was the most popular real estate program on the market and done in FoxPro Windows 2.6. No one thought to test the computers but I suggested it to the president of the company. The first unit was purchased and they went to load the software. The computer would not boot up. I congratulated the owner on purchasing the fastest computers available that would not work! DEC had a very serious problem. :)

Sometimes having a good product is more important that being first to market. It just depends upon your point of view.

Tom

>Tom,
>Yes, don't I know it. When I went to 'spec' it on a Friday, they only had 1.7gHz CPUs available, and on Monday when I went to finalize the order they'd introduced the 2.0gHz. Now 3 1/2 months later, they've released the 2.2gHz processors! (I'm "obsolete". <g>)

>>>You're welcome Gary. I didn't even get a chance to brag about the 512mb RAM, the two 7200 RPM SCSI HDs, 16x/40x DVD drive and a 22" monitor! (I'll probably have to live with this one for the next 4-5 years!)

But a quick "kill" in the task manager and starting it up again fixes things right up.

I have a couple of third party libraries that plain refuse to run under Win2000 and as the legacy application uses some Novell libraries too, they don't run well under NT or 2000 hence, the requirement to run Win9X (VFP will run on Win9X better than FPW runs on NT/2000 for me, at any rate).

We would likely be running Win98 on the new machine(s) (as our 2.6 apps behave better in Win98 than they do in NT/2000). We have only run our 2.6 apps on P3 750mhz class machines so far. We have no idea whether the Fast Processor patch will handle the very much faster machines that are selling nowadays (P4 1ghz+).
