Malcolm,
You could build a cursor and use the "prompt field" clause of the define popup. In a normal popup, each item required a significant amount of memory. All the "prompt" clauses were interpreted internally to FP and as such, the memory management was completely different.

I remember using this technique to display well over 1000 options.
