Was the ticket allocation by ballot? Here in Sydney a year and a half ago, the popular events were way over-subscribed. Most people were lucky to get 1/2 the tickets they bid for.
I agree about the once in a lifetime bit - The place transforms and there's two weeks of surreal atmosphere. People talk to strangers and there's a general feeling of goodwill in the air. The sport it pretty good too.
