Yes, the target output is to the CLR. What actually happens, I think only the designers know for sure <g>. The documention infers that it provides some code generation. "The Microsoft.VisualBasic namespace contains the Visual Basic.NET runtime. This runtime is used with the Visual Basic.NET language. The Microsoft.VisualBasic namespace also contains classes that support compilation and code generation using the Visual Basic.NET language." Microsoft.VisualBasic
