If you are still looking into this problem and your application uses 1) buffering and 2) grids on a form you might also check MS Knowledge Base article Q260227. It describes a verified "File is in use" bug that has been around since VFP 3.0.

Their example uses INSERT INTO... but, perhaps, append blank gives the same result.
