I'm not sure what's happening here.

'DEFAULT' filegroup is full". I rebooted the server to reintialize TEMPDB.

This message tells me that you've run out of space in the TEMPDB database. Which is caused by:

- database is not setup to autogrow
- no available disk space on the partition where the .mdf resides
- disk quotas have been established

But I would have expected to see something in either the SQL Server error log or one of the event logs.

Have you thought about rebuilding the machine?
