I use the space() function when I can because of the self documenting nature of it. "" looks like the null string however, what does "  " look like to you? If using a non-proportional font, you could count them (a waste of time, IMO). If using a proportional font, good luck in trying to figure it out.

So since I use space() for strings greater than 0 in length, I also use it for 0 length strings for consistency.
