Interesting story. My father was a U.S. Marine and “enjoyed” 14 campaigns in the Pacific including Iwo Jima and Okinawa. . He had three jobs during WWII - Sniper, machine gunner and high speed cw (Morse Code) operator. After the war he was on the Marine Corp Rifle Team. When I was 16 I was in the top 10 shooters in California, and at 17 on this day February 12th, many years ago, I went into the U.S. Air Force. They found out I could shoot at 1200 yards and wanted me to be on their rifle team and "invited" me to be a Forward Observer (Army called them Path Finders). I said no and am glad I did as this was not for me.

I met a U.S. Army sniper whom I worked with about 20 years ago. He had many kills and was the craziest human I ever met when sober. You did not want to be around him in any other state. :( I felt sorry for him and liked to avoid him when possible. He told me many of the things he did. My father never would discuss anything he did but he had many medals including the Silver Star.

My main reason for going into the Air Force was I would not have to shoot anyone. I am happy that turned out to be the case. At least I can sleep at night. Sleeping at night was difficult for my father or seeing anything related to war. Everyone is different as far as how they react but most people are quiet about such activities.

Watch out for the guy that has a string strung with the ears of those he shot. He might be the guy I knew 20 years ago or one like him!

Too bad mankind becomes involved in activities that involve killing.
