Thanks to everyone who offered their assistance on this problem. Unfortunately, none of the ideas offered got me precisely the behavior I needed for the {enter} key, but Larry, your suggestion triggered the idea which DID work for me. I simply put a simple IF .. ELSE ... ENDIF statement in the command button's WHEN method. If the statement evaluates to .F., the button won't get focus and will no trigger at all. Maybe not the most elegant or "object oriented" solution, but results sometimes are all the matter :)
