I didn't see it either. While his performance was technically good, I did not like the artistic piece. That's where the subjective scoring comes in.

A brilliant performance by the second ranked competitor may be enough to win, but the same performance by the third ranked competitor usually won't be. IMO this seems to be true in all the "judged" sports (figure skating, gymnastics, diving, etc.)
