The problem might be on the Adobe side. Are you sure the versions are the same there? You might also want to install (if not already done) their latest upgrade (5.0.5) which solved at least one problem I had with a Syntax font that refused to appear in the PDF.

Thanks for your reply. What has me really puzzled about this is that nothing that seems relevant to the issue has changed on my development PC since this VFP app was first deployed about a year ago. I am still using Adobe Acrobat 4.0, and the code that does the merge of several PDF documents is unchanged. I have installed the Windows 2000 SP2 and have upgraded to VFP7 in the mean time but it seems unlikely that either of those should have any effect on merging PDF documents. The code that merges the PDF documents simply does not work as it did a year ago when this app was deployed (or at least it appears so).
